Don’t you just love Michelle Obama? It’s almost unbelievable that during Barack’s campaign there were concerns in some quarters about his wife’s suitability for the role of First Lady (do you remember the “proud American” quote that was scrutinised and blown out of proportion?). Now, whenever Michelle opens her mouth she amazes and charms.
Latest case in point comes from an interview by Glamour magazine, celebrating Mrs Obama in its Women of the Year issue. This lady knows her self-worth and she encourages and inspires other women to discover their own as well.
Forget the martyr role: Michelle knows that in order to be your best you need to make time for yourself. “I have always tried to put my kids first, and then … put myself a really close second, as opposed to fifth or seventh,” she explains. However, one lesson Michelle has learned from men she admires was that “they don’t hesitate to invest in themselves”.
She also has dating advice, delivered in her typical straight-talking style. “Cute’s good. But cute only lasts for so long, and then it’s ‘who are you as a person?’. Don’t look at the bankbook or the title. Look at the heart. Look at the soul,” Michelle says. “When you’re dating a man, you should always feel good…. You shouldn’t be in a relationship with somebody who doesn’t make you completely happy and make you feel whole.”
