international day of peace

Today is International Day of Peace. On 21 September each year, people all over the world promote the concept of a world without war. This year the slogan is We Must Disarm, and the focus is on the dangers of nuclear weapons.
For many of us, nuclear warfare is a subject for Hollywood blockbusters, hippie protestors or boring politicians. However, nuclear warfare is a real threat and one that could spell the end of humanity. You might not have grown up in a culture or generation where the harsh realities of Hiroshima were on your doorstep. You might not be interested in how nukes are built or the pros and cons of disarmament.
But if you’re interested in leaving behind a legacy for your children and their children, then you should take some interest in what is happening with nuclear weapons across the world.
There are many ways in which you can get involved if you wish – from writing to politicians to joining pressure groups. However, the most important thing you can do is to educate yourself and spread the word, so that everyone can learn that the nuclear weapon debate is something that affects us all.

Today is the day. South Africa is going to the polls for the third democratic election and it’s almost as exciting as that first one in 1994. People are queuing for ages to get their finger marked and make their mark; a Facebook friend who is over 6 months pregnant stood in line for three hours to do her bit for the future of her baby boy.
I’m excited, I’m homesick, I’m inspired, I’m hopeful… but most of all I’m praying. May God bless South Africa, its people and its leaders today and every day!

Such good news for all South African expats last week. If you are already registered to vote (for example if you voted back in SA in 2004), then you can apply for a special vote in order to cast your ballot on 15 April.
I have to say I’ve been really impressed by the Democratic Alliance in how they fought for expats’ democratic rights and how they use the internet (their homepage, Facebook, Twitter, etc) to keep us informed. May expats now do their bit and actually make the effort to apply and then go vote!
