Beer bread is a traditional Afrikaans recipe. Served lukewarm with butter melting into it, it is a regular fixture on a braai menu. Personally, the most appealing thing about beer bread is that it is SO easy to make – no kneading or bread makers or fancy technique.
Mix 500g self-raising flower, 5ml salt and a cup grated Cheddar cheese. Add 340ml beer (lager) and mix well. Pour into a greased breadtin and bake for 45 mins at 180 degrees C.
Delicious, easy and impressive!

It’s Heritage Day in South Africa today and people across the country are celebrating with that favourite South African pastime, braai (BBQ). You can read loads about this fantastic day on this website, but in honour of the tradition, I have put together a list of my top three salads to accompany a braai. I’ll have to add my mom’s curry peach salad to this at some point but I can’t remember the recipe off by heart – as you can see these salads (particularly the fruity ones) really don’t require much culinary skill or expertise. Perfect for days when you’d much rather be sitting out by the braai sipping on something cool rather than slaving in the kitchen!
Potato salad (aartappelslaai)
What’s better to enjoy with a lekker chop and piece of boerewors than a tangy and wholesome serving of potato salad? Hmmmm aartappels…. Gesondheid uit die grond uit.
Peel and chop some potatoes (I’d say about 2 potatoes per person) into 1.5in pieces and put on the boil in some salted water. Chop smoked bacon into blocks (one rasher per person) and fry until crisp with about half a finely sliced spring onion per person. Mix equal portions of mustard (English or Dijon – depending on taste) and mayonnaise, season to taste and add a dash of milk. Once cooked, let the potatoes cool off and the mix everything together. Season if needed and sprinkle with fresh spring onions and parsley.
I’ve not tried this variation but I really like Cook Sister’s blog so I’m sure you would want to give this recipe a shot too.
Carrot salad (wortelslaai)
So easy, the kids can make it. Grate carrots, add a small tin of pineapple pieces with some of the juices. I think my mom used to add OJ or Oros (orange squash) to this as well when we were kids. Yummy.
Banana and apple yoghurt salad (piesang, appel en joghurt slaai)
Another super easy one – this recipe sounds more like dessert but it works brilliantly with some salty meatiness fresh from the coals. Chop up bananas and apples (about 3 bananas per apple and add strawberry yoghurt. Robert is your mother’s brother.
